Hi, I'm Rod Anderson, the owner of Foundling Books in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb
of
Columbus. Foundling Books started in 1999, and the specialties
reflect some of
my own book collecting interests. But I enjoy all
kinds of books and I think
our stock reflects this with a wide range
of books in many different subject
areas.
Growing up in the 50s and 60s, I was a Boy Scout. Many years later, as my
own
sons started in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, I became active as an
adult Scouting
leader. I began to collect Boy Scout publications and
literature. The
Scouting movement has a very rich literary history.
All of the founders of Boy
Scouts were prolific writers and
accomplished illustrators before they pooled
their talents to start
the largest organized youth movement in the world. And
the literature
includes both timeless outdoor skills and an appreciation for
nature
and its conservation. And all of this rich heritage, nature
drawings,
and great storytelling can be found in official, unofficial,
non-fiction and
fiction books in Boy Scout (and Girl Scout)
literature.
What baby boomer doesn't remember "Uncle Walt?" Walt Disney's weekly visits
in
the living room turned millions of us into "Mouseketeers" – and who
didn't want
to visit Disneyland in person to meet Mickey and Donald,
ride the monorail, and
pretend to be Davy Crockett or Zorro in
Frontierland? While the animated
feature films entertained me as a
child, I now have an adult interest in the
art, artistry and advancing
technology that went into those feature length
"cartoons." And in the
very recent past, some of the notable artists/animators
who began
their careers in the early days with Walt have been able to
produce
some of the most wonderful books about the art and stories
that painstakingly
were put together to make these films. Now I can
appreciate and enjoy these
classic films and their art on an adult
level as well through Disney books.
And I find the story of the Disney
brothers is an irresistible rags-to-riches
story.
Art and illustration is also a very important feature of children's
literature.
Accomplished, creative illustrators turn wonderful stories
into classic
children's books. One of my earliest memories is of a
wonderfully illustrated
copy of The Ugly Duckling from the library
long before I could even read.
I truly enjoy finding these kinds of books and making them available to you
and
your children. Classic books, enjoyable and entertaining books,
beautifully
illustrated books - books to entertain, enlighten, and
enjoy, not just for
their value.
I also enjoy reading and collecting other authors and genres. In fiction,
my
favorites are Richard Adams (especially Traveler), W. P. Kinsella,
Earl Hamner,
Jr., Mackinley Kantor, Mark Helprin. For mysteries, I
like John Mortimer's
Rumpole stories. In non-fiction, I primarily
enjoy reading and collecting
books about the Second Boer War, the
Pittsburgh Pirates, and biographies in
general. And with four
children and a grandson, I still enjoy Dr. Seuss and
Little Golden
Books.
